That title seems a bit “strict”. But in fact we should only return items unless absolutely necessary. Stores such as Aldi, Target, Sears, Nordstrom and eBay all have very detailed return policies. Now that’s not to say that you should not return a “defective” item or if it is not as described. The problem is that many people return items just because they want their money back.
So let’s say you purchase an item and then 25 days into having it you have “buyer’s remorse” should you be able to get your money back? Should you be eligible to return the item? Most policies do allow you up to 30 days to return an item, but it’s usually if something is defective. Isn’t it a bit dishonest to return an item that you’ve used and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it? The only change is that you’re no longer “hyped” about it. That in fact should be an item that is never returned. You paid for it willingly therefore you should keep it or perhaps sell it 🙂
With that said there are times as noted that you should return items. If the product is no longer working, if the product is basically not as described then by all means you should return it. Keep this in mind the next time you take a stop by a retail store. Be honest with yourself, if you were the owner of that store would you want to be ripped off? That’s basically what you’re doing when you return an item for reasons beyond “defective”.
So take a look in the mirror and decide for yourself, do I want to be a serial returner or an honest person who lives with the “impulse buys” that you’ve made 🙂 I trust that you will make the right decision. So until next time, let’s be honest!
Here’s how some retailers handle refunds/returns
